ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL MANDATES DON'T FIT

And one top-down approach on paid leave doesn’t help workers and businesses in Maryland. Last session, legislators voted to require Maryland businesses to provide paid leave for nearly all employees. Governor Larry Hogan vetoed the bill, but we need your support to sustain the veto.

Treat workers fairly. Provide benefits to reduce employee turnover. Keep employees happy and healthy. It’s good business and a mandate is not needed.
PAID LEAVE FOR EVERYONE IS
WELL-INTENTIONED,
BUT THERE IS MORE TO THE STORY.

HB 1, IN BUSINESS' PERSPECTIVE, IS:
RIGID
Business owners respond to workers’ needs or workers will find new jobs. Mandating paid leave may come at the expense of other benefits such as health care, education assistance and retirement packages.
HARSH
Undefined terms and the presumption of employer wrongdoing, coupled with nine separate forms of penalties, set businesses up to fail.
CONFUSING
This bill applies to ALL businesses – regardless of size. That means ALL employees will be affected. Competing local, state and federal laws define employees differently and create different thresholds for compliance.
JOIN US IN ASKING LEGISLATORS TO
SUSTAIN GOVERNOR HOGAN'S VETO.
This mandate will hurt the diverse businesses that employ hundreds of thousands of Marylanders.  Our state needs jobs. Costly one-size-fits-all mandates stand in the way of this critical mission.
